The Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) enters the New Year with appreciation, having been recognized as the nation’s top-performing health authority for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024).

Building on this remarkable success, WHPHA continued to uphold the same spirit of excellence throughout 2025, motivating its workforce to maintain their dedication and commitment as they step into 2026.

Speaking during the Public Service Dedication ceremony, Director for Nursing Services, Sr Janet Yamu, commended the staff whose teamwork has driven WHPHA’s success. She acknowledged the challenges of rising patient numbers and increased outpatient visits, but emphasized that the resilience and determination of the workforce and that of the acting CEO Jane Holden, has ensured quality care was delivered.

“We have seen many challenges along the way but thank you for your commitment in ensuring we deliver the care we are mandated to provide despite these challenges,” Sr Yamu told the gathering.

She went on to highlight several achievements that have strengthened healthcare delivery in the province, noting that progress has been made even in the face of adversity. These include the establishment of the PSA oxygen plant to improve patient care, the successful implementation of the Wellness Program, and the HPV routine vaccination initiative. She also announced that the new Radiology Building is nearing completion, which will soon provide CT scans and mammograms locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to Kundiawa or other provinces.

Other achievements include the referral pathway at the Antenatal Clinic and Labour Ward, ensuring that expectant mothers receive safe and supervised deliveries. In addition, the new home care program brings essential hospital services directly into communities, allowing families to access quality care close to home. This thoughtful approach helps preserve the hospital’s limited bed capacity for those who are critically ill.

Sr Yamu said these achievements reflect WHPHA’s commitment to improved patient-centred care, while also setting a strong foundation for continued progress in 2026.

“As we dedicate ourselves this year, let us do a reflection in our own individual lives and continue to uphold the values of service and teamwork. Together, we can deliver even greater outcomes for our people,” she concluded.
