The Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority’s Public Health team brought the city of Mt Hagen to life last Friday as they joined the global community in commemorating two important health events: World Malaria Day and World Immunization Week. Both events carried powerful themes—“Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must” and “For Every Generation, Vaccines Work”—highlighting the urgency of malaria control and the lasting impact of vaccines across all age groups.

In a spirited outreach, the team fanned out across the city, delivering health education and awareness activities. Residents were reminded of simple but life-saving practices such as sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets, eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and using repellents. To reinforce these messages, rapid diagnostic testing (RDT) and treatment for malaria were also provided, ensuring that awareness is translated into immediate action.

The campaign extended beyond malaria. WHPHA seized the opportunity to emphasize the importance of routine immunization programs, stressing that vaccines are essential for children, adults, and the elderly alike. Cervical cancer screening awareness and promotion of the HPV vaccine were also integrated into the outreach, reflecting a comprehensive approach to public health service delivery.

By integrating malaria control with immunization advocacy, WHPHA demonstrated its commitment to improving health outcomes and building trust within the community. From educating families on mosquito prevention to encouraging routine vaccinations for all age groups, the activities inspired hope and reinforced the message that healthier communities can be achieved through collective effort.
