The Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) has once again been ranked Number One in Papua New Guinea, securing the top position for the second year in a row. This remarkable achievement places Western Highlands firmly at the frontline of national health excellence.

Board Chairman Sam Koim described the back-to-back ranking as a confirmation that disciplined governance, committed staff, and strategic direction can transform health outcomes, even in the face of nationwide constraints.

“Rising from 8th place in 2022 to Number One in both 2023 and 2024 is nothing short of extraordinary,” Mr Koim said. “It shows that when our people are united by purpose and guided by a clear strategy, Western Highlands can set the national benchmark for quality health care.”

The national assessment highlighted strong improvements in key health indicators, particularly maternal and child health, antenatal care coverage, and childhood immunisation rates, areas that form the backbone of community health. WHPHA’s consistent leadership in these areas demonstrates an organisation that is not only performing but thriving.

Mr Koim acknowledged that major external pressures continue to challenge health service delivery across the country.

“We are all operating within a national system affected by drug shortages, supply chain issues, and funding constraints and the unfairly huge demand on our health care facilities by other Highlands Provinces,” he said. “But what sets Western Highlands PHA apart is our resilience. We have refused to let these challenges define us.”

He emphasised that WHPHA is moving boldly in a clear strategic direction: “We are on a Path to Excellence. This Number One ranking is not our destination, it is our starting point. I am proud of what we have achieved, but I am even more excited by what lies ahead. The best is yet to come.”

Mr Koim expressed deep appreciation to every individual and organisation that contributed to the success. “I thank acting CEO Jane Holden and Management Team, frontline workers, clinicians, support staff, church health services, development partners, and community leaders, saying that this victory belongs to all of you. You are the heartbeat of this organisation, and your dedication has placed Western Highlands at the top of the country.”

The WHPHA Board remains committed to strengthening governance, driving strategic reforms, and ensuring that every Western Highlander receives the quality of care they deserve.
