In honor of World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) held a series of educational sessions for the staff at Highlander Hotel on Friday (October 10th, 2025). The aim of these sessions was to raise awareness about breast cancer and promote the importance of early detection.

The initiative aligns with the global observance held every October, a month dedicated to honouring the millions of women affected by breast cancer and reinforcing the commitment to equitable access to care and improved survival rates. This year’s theme, “Every Story Is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” highlights the importance of individual experiences in the fight against breast cancer.

WHPHA staff members Freda Pyanyo and Elizabeth Pundu, led both the morning and afternoon sessions, providing practical guidance on breast self-examinations and encouraging proactive health checks. The sessions were designed to empower female staff to understand their bodies and recognize early warning signs, such as unusual lumps in the breast, underarms, or armpits.

Male hotel staff members who were also involved in the discussions, were urged by the clinicians to share this information with their wives, daughters, and sisters.

“Awareness begins at home,” said Ms Pyanyo. “By spreading the message, we can help our loved ones seek early medical advice and potentially save lives.”

Meanwhile, the team also raised awareness of the services provided at Mt Hagen Provincial Hospital and conducted wellness checks after each session. Such awareness programs are part of WHPHA’s broader outreach efforts across the province, aiming to foster a culture of health consciousness and early intervention.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, WHPHA encourages all citizens to participate in educational activities, extend support to those affected, and prioritize regular health screenings.

WHPHA further extends heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Sudeep Geethanandan, General Manager of the Highlander Hotel, for their invitation to provide awareness sessions that empowered attendees with vital information on breast cancer prevention and care.
