In a world where screens dominate our daily routines, eye health often takes a back seat. Recognizing this, WHPHA hosted a free eye clinic last Thursday (October 9th, 2025) for public servants at the Sir Mara Haus (Provincial Government Headquarters) to mark World Sight Day. Themed “Love Your Eyes,” it served as a timely reminder of the importance of regular eye care in an increasingly digital world.

Dr. Waimbe Wahamu, the Highlands Regional Ophthalmologist, emphasized that World Sight Day is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of healthy eyes, particularly in the workplace. “All parts of our body are important as they function in harmony,” he asserted. “While our eyes might appear to be a small part of our body, they are the light of our body.” 

He noted that many government workers often find themselves too busy to seek medical checkups, which is why the Eye Care team from Mt Hagen Provincial Hospital brought their services directly to them. “This day is dedicated to raising awareness among our people so they can have a clear vision in serving our people and the province effectively,” Dr Wahamu explained.

The clinic offered vision screenings and consultations, enabling staff to identify issues such as near-sightedness and far-sightedness. Dr Wahamu also addressed the impact of digital devices on eye health, warning that phones and tablets can be harmful if not used mindfully. “We are sharing messages about the importance of blinking often, reducing screen brightness, and wearing appropriate glasses according to one’s condition,” he added.

World Sight Day is observed annually on the second Thursday of October and aims to highlight how good vision contributes to well-being and economic productivity. The WHPHA’s initiative not only provided essential care but also reinforced the message that healthy eyes are crucial for a productive and fulfilling life.
