Since 2024, the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) has been extending its care beyond the hospital by identifying and supporting patients with special needs both during their stay and continuing that care at home. To date, more than 60 patients have received follow- up support, reflecting WHPHA’s commitment to holistic, patient-centred healthcare.
This initiative has been significantly strengthened through a generous partnership with Leanne Barnett from Someone Who Cares (SWC), a compassionate organization based in Australia. SWC has provided essential medical equipment, instruments, and consumables, enabling WHPHA staff to better serve patients in need.
One notable example of this support is the donation of a wheelchair to 14-year-old Ismael Paul, a long-term patient from Bukapena in the Mul-Baiyer electorate of Western Highlands Province. Previously, his mobility had been significantly limited, but thanks to SWC’s assistance, Ismael now enjoys greater independence and ease of movement. He and his parents have expressed heartfelt gratitude to both WHPHA and SWC.
WHPHA extends special thanks to Ms Barnett, whose direct contributions of wheelchairs, crutches, and other vital supplies have made a visible difference in the lives of many patients.
“We are deeply grateful to SWC and to individuals like her for their unwavering support,” said a WHPHA spokesperson. “Together, we are improving health outcomes and restoring hope for our communities.
