The Mt Hagen Provincial Hospital received an extraordinary gesture of generosity last Sunday when the Kelua 2 Seventh-Day Adventist Church, donated a huge amount of food supplies to its kitchen.
Arriving in their own arranged transport, church members delivered 21 bags of kaukau (sweet potato), 9 bags of cabbage, and a plastic bag of onions, essential food that will help sustain inpatients in the days ahead.
The effort was led by the Church Elder, who is also the Manager for the Physiotherapy Department at the Hospital, Mr. David Mambu, who rallied the group for the mission of giving.
The donation involved a dedicated congregation comprising: Pastor Samuel Kamesoa of Kelua 2 SDA Church, Pathfinders, Adventurers, church elders, department leaders, ministers and other church members.
Benjamin Koim, the Pathfinder Leader, highlighted the spiritual motivation behind their act and said, “Jesus spent His time with those in need, especially the sick and hopeless, to bring them joy and peace, and we are continuing His mission to serve those who are in need,” he said.
Welfare Leader Margaret Essen reiterated and said doing the Lord’s work requires commitment and sacrifice, that is why we are gathered here as a church to ensure that we serve the needy,” she stated.
Essen emphasized that, rather than cooking and distributing meals, an approach that might only benefit a few hospital wards, they decided to donate directly to the kitchen so that all patients would benefit.
In addition to food donation, the church also provided hygiene essentials such as tissue, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to certain named wards.
In welcoming the donation, Clinical Nursing Supervisor Richard Isaac expressed deep gratitude, calling it a landmark contribution. “This is the first time the hospital has received such a huge food donation from the SDA Church, and I know it will go a long way in helping us provide meals for inpatients,” he said.
He lauded the church’s dedication, recognizing the sacrifice behind such generosity. “This act of kindness shows the heart you have for our patients. Food is costly, and your willingness to dig deep into your own pockets for this contribution speaks volumes. May God continue to bless you,” he said.
With faith-driven compassion at its core, this donation serves as an example of selflessness and community spirit, reinforcing the notion that when people come together for a greater cause, lives can truly be changed.
